Hey there, I have a very very sad news today.

I can’t blog anymore…..

Cuz I’m moving….

I’m so depressed….

Guess What This Post is About!

Posted by: yoojeong01kr2015 on: January 8, 2009

Hi there, This is YJ! Today, I’m going to talk about something amazing, powerful, and supernatural. Let me give you some more clues, it’s a “thing” (or material) that has two poles and has forces of attraction and repulsion. Have you got the idea what it is?? Yeah! You’re right! It’s the magnetism!

Basically, magnetism is what brings magnets to work. Then you might wonder, “What’s magnet?” or “Where did this come from?” or “How this people in the past discovered it?” or “Who were the first people to find it out?” or “What was its early name?” and blahblahblahyaliyaliyali. Since magnet has been there on the earth for sooooo~~ long, nobody’s really sure about the history of it. According to what my book says, magnets were first found by the Greeks, more than 2000 years ago. When they first found this mineral that attracted objects containing iron (well, that’s magnet..:)), they named it magnetite after the name of the place where they found it.

Then you will wonder, “What is the usage of the magnets in our daily life?”. The most well-known magnets are the amazing refrigerator magnets that are used for note, reminders, lists, and etc. The advantages of these amazing refrigerator magnets are that they don’t leave any marks on the refrigerator after sticking it on, and it’s easily to take them off and on. Another usage is for cows! Can you believe it? The magnets used for cows are called Cow Magnet. Cow magnets are magnets that looks like a round stick. In farms or where cows live, there are sometimes little pieces of irons or wires lying on the ground. But cows don’t notice and just eat them. And that’s what cow magnets are for. They collect those materials in the cow’s first stomach so that they dont’ harm the cow;s health. One another amazing usage of magnets is used for the train called Maglev. Meglev is named after Megnetic Levitation. The magnets in Maglev are called superconducting magnets.

This is how the magnets work to make Maglev levitate. When the superconducting magnets passes the ceter of the coils(the 8 shaped coilds at the sides) at a high speed, an electric current induces within the coils. As a result, there are forces that push the magnet up and ones which pull them up at the same time, it levitates the Maglev.

While I was looking for fun facts of magnetism and magnets, I found out some cool ones. The first one is that the birds can find their way home using the magnetic field of the Earth! I also found a funny story about lodestone. A scientist of ancient Greece was supposed to pull the nails our of the ships of the enemy and he pulled the nails out using lodestone, and resulted in them sinking. :)

I think the world of magnetism is both simple and complicated…! (You’re real smart if you get what that means…!!haha XD)

Book Review of ‘Space’

Posted by: yoojeong01kr2015 on: December 29, 2008

space-book.jpg

Book Title: Space

Author: Will Osborne and Mary Pope Osborne

Task: 6. Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not? (To be done after completion of a book.)

(Different from the books what I read so far, I decided to read a nonfiction book about ‘Space’.)

I would DEFINITELY recommend the book, Space to anybody because the facts inside the book are described with easy explanations. For example, when the authors described Solar System, they said,

“Our part of space is called our Solar System. Our solar system is the sun and everything that travels around it.” instead of saying,

“Solar system is the sun with the celestial bodies that revolve around it in its gravitational field.”

Beside that, there are also more elements that make the book interesting.

They are small tags next to the context in each page that explain the definitions of important vocabularies which help the readers to understand the text better.  Also, the diagrams in the book give a better understanding of the text.

Before reading this book, I thought space was a boring place with bunch of stars and planets. However, after reading this book, I discovered that Space is an amazing place with unbelievable, and incredible facts. I also learned so many facts about space that are both interesting, and important  such as

“One year in Saturn equals 30 years on Earth” or “Because there’s no wind or rain on the moon, footprints in the moon’s dust will last forever.” or “The stars that we can see are 2000 and stars in the universe are 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000″and a lot more.

I think Space is a book that suits for any age since it consists stories that are easy to understand but important!

Afterall, who would want to miss a book that is full of fun facts, photos, illustrations, definitions and a lot more! (I wouldn’t!)
